In April, Derek Johnson (Director - School of Art & Design, West Suffolk College) visited the USA for academic research and to tour several art colleges. These included Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), Delaware College of Art & Design and The P.I. Art Center New York (UAL).
The PI Art Center in New York is a new overseas centre for UAL – delivering the UAL Foundation Diploma Art & Design qualification. Situated in central Manhattan - on 7th Avenue and very close to Madison Square Garden, Dominic Terlizzi is the Director of School there.
Derek previously met Dominic and his team as delegates on-line at the UAL Art & Maths CPD programme which he delivers with Elise Ruffell.
Derek said, “The visit was a wonderful ‘in-person’ opportunity to meet the American team, learn from resources, view student work and discuss future collaborations. It was a really positive and impressive experience to visit The P.I. Center and to forge a link between the trans-Atlantic UAL colleges.”
Dominic Terlizzi said: “Derek offered a very helpful CPD to PI Art Center which has impacted how we consider the relationship of Art and Mathematics. We welcome him and other UAL Awarding Body members to visit us anytime. We are looking forward to ways that our students and campus locations can collaborate in the future.”
