About the course
This GCSE course is a one year intensive course for Adults.
The course is fast paced, so good attendance is required to ensure you keep up with the content and do not miss essential practical work. It is a popular course for people looking for a career change or looking to meet the requirements to have a science GCSE for further study.
AQA GCSE Biology we offer the option of Foundation or Higher to be discussed with your tutor
Entry requirements
- All applicants should be 19+.
- Students should have a reasonable grasp of level 2 English and Maths (i.e., grade 3/4, C/D at GCSE) or be studying for a level 2 qualification in English and Maths.
Qualifications
This GCSE (grades 9-1, where 9 is the highest grade) in Biology a linear qualification that consists of 2 externally examined assessments. (AQA)
What you'll learn (core modules)
Topics covered within this course include:
1. Cell biology- animal, plant and bacterial cells.
2. Organisation- tissues, organs and body systems.
3. Disease and defence- communicable disease, infection control and the development and use of drugs.
4. Bioenergetics- cellular respiration and photosynthesis
5. Homeostasis- the nervous system, hormones and negative feedback systems.
6. Inheritance, variation and evolution- reproduction, DNA and genetic engineering.
7. Ecology- adaptations, ecosystems and decomposition.
How will I be assessed?
Two written exams in May/June 2025
Paper 1: 1 hour 45 minutes 50%
Paper 2: 1 hour 45 minutes 50%
There are 10 required practicals to complete throughout the year and the theory and application of these is examined within these two papers. There is no practical examination.
Where is the course delivered? (facilities/classrooms)
Through classroom based activities, homework and regular assessment leading to final, external exams. In addition to one unaided and one aided observational task.
Where will this course take me?
With English, Maths and a science GCSE such as this one, you could progress onto an Access course in Health science or Midwifery and Nursing, a Btec Level 2 or 3 in Applied Science. Alternatively you could use this to meet the qualifications for Initial Teacher Training programmes or Nursing training programmes.
