These courses will help learners to develop the digital skills they need for life, work, or further study.  We have classes for beginners to advanced learners.

 

12-16 week Course - 3 hours per session

 

the Entry 3/Level 1 course takes place in the classroom at a Learning Centre.  The higher Level 2 course is an online evening class.

This is a new, fully funded, Gateway L2 course which focuses on Microsoft Office skills, specifically Excel and Word.

It is a natural progression from the EDS Level 1 course and focuses in on more advanced skills in Excel and Word.

The course will last for 16 weeks with the first 8 weeks focusing on Excel skills and the second 8 weeks on Word.

 

This is the perfect introduction for those who are feeling left behind in this internet age and want to know how to use a Windows computer to access the wealth of information that can be found on the internet. It is aimed at those who have no, or very little, knowledge of computers and how to get online.

In plain non-technical language, it will take you through the very basics of what a computer is, how to operate it and look at how to use your computer to access and use the internet to; search for information, access online services like banking, benefits, taxes, passports and other government services. how to shop online and how to access social media to keep in touch with friends and family.

 

The course will have a mix of taught and practice sessions to help embed your new skills and covers the following topics:

Part 1 (5 Weeks)

  • What a computer is and the different types of computers available
  • Using a keyboard, mouse, and touchpad
  • Understanding the Windows 10 screen
  • How to find and open different applications
  • How to access the internet and search using your computer
  • How to save websites you visit regularly
  • Staying safe on the internet and understand what can be trusted
  • Accessing online services, filling out online forms to book appointments, holidays, apply for jobs etc.
  • Online shopping
  • How to access social media websites and emails

 

Part 2 (7 Weeks)

  • Using devices and handling information
  • File Management
  • Microsoft Word
  • Creating and editing
  • Communicating
  • Transacting
  • Being safe and responsible online

This course is aimed at anyone who wants to expand their knowledge on keeping young people safe online.  The course will provide learners with a general understanding of how and why it's crucial to promote the safety and welfare of young people in an online setting.  Learners will also delve into the laws that are in place, how to spot signs of abuse, and the different technologies available.

This course is designed for users who wish to use the advanced functions of Excel including pivot tables and simple macros. 

 

It will provide delegates with more advanced skills and techniques for customising and automating spreadsheets.  Exposure to pivot tables and macros are covered.

 

The course will be run at West Suffolk College on Tuesday 10 December 2024 from 9.00am to 4.30pm.
