A group of carpenters and joiners from West Suffolk College all chipped in by creating a showcase octagonal roof of a gazebo topped with a giant hardwood crown at the Suffolk Show.

The idea was to honour the Queen ahead of the upcoming Jubilee celebrations with the roof elevating at a 70 degree angle to reflect her 70 years upon the throne.

The build took two days and saw apprentices who study at the Bury St Edmunds based educational establishment use their talents to celebrate her majesty.

Whilst at the show, local schools put their names forward to receive delivery of the completed gazebo later in the year and the winner of this competition will be drawn on Monday 6 June 2022.

18 year old Harvey Cook is studying on a level three apprenticeship at the College whilst working for Taylor Made Joinery Interiors Ltd.

On his involvement, Harvey said: “I’m very happy with how it’s gone. Because of the fact the crown-topped gazebo will be donated to a school, the legacy will live on.”

Organiser of the tribute is carpentry and joinery lecturer Brian Tunbridge. Brian said: “We wanted to do something for the Jubilee and what could be more Jubilee than a crown?

“The students worked hard and I’m very happy with what has been produced.”

Elsewhere at the Suffolk Show, Tom Taylor and Josh Sturman from West Suffolk College took part in a bricklaying contest and came runners up in skills competition that pitted their talents against other local colleges. On this experience, Josh said, “It’s been a good experience.”
