West Suffolk College students shaving their heads, holding a quiz night, sponsored skeleton, sponsored walk and 24 hour non-stop sport all added up to a fantastic £4,500 being raised for the GeeWizz charity to purchase laptops for Priory School in Bury.
The students in business, law, sport, tourism and science took on the tasks at the start of Global Enterprise Week and used their entrepreneurial skills to come up with their own ways of raising the cash.
One group of Level 3 business students raised a magnificent £2,000. Josh Nuttall, who helped organise the quiz night and raffle said: “It was a good experience to plan it and to work as a group.” Georgia Kembery said she spent a week bag packing at Marks and Spencer where people were very generous. Ed Rust, who had his head shaved and sold snacks and drinks in the college, said he was “Quite proud, it was really good and worth doing.”
The cheque presentation with the final sum was made to Crystal Barber from GeeWizz who thanked the students and said: “The funds raised by the fantastic students at West Suffolk College will help to purchase Microsoft Surface Pro tablets for the students at the Priory School, to allow them to access the art curriculum and stimulate their creative learning and development.”
Business Studies course director Gareth Nolan said the students had all worked really hard to raise money. They had also gained so much from their activities including work experience, social responsibility, and working together as well as in the community. “They have done brilliantly and I am really proud of them.”
The new tablets will be now be handed over to pupils at Priory School in Bury.
