After a hugely successful open event a group of students who will be attending Abbeygate Sixth Form College in September had the fantastic opportunity to visit the building site, to be amongst the first group of people to see the swift progress being made.

The site visit was led by Wates Contractors and included a presentation, a tour of the site and the opportunity for the students to ask questions.

The new state of the art building will be four storeys high with the capacity to accommodate over 1700 students from across Bury St Edmunds and beyond. The building will have state of the art science labs, outstanding sports facilities, purpose built classrooms, and an investment of £1million in IT to support the delivery of an extensive range of A Levels.

David Gartland, Abbeygate Principal, Nikos Savvas, Suffolk Academies Trust Chief Executive, Stuart Small, Director of Curriculum and Elton D’Souza, Chair of Governors joined the students on the site visit.

David Gartland said: “This was a great opportunity to take our students to see the exciting progress of the new building for Abbeygate Sixth Form College.  The College is for students from all schools in Bury St Edmunds and beyond and the sheer size of the site shows the significant investment that is being put into post 16 education in this area.

He continued, “The new building is on schedule and my colleagues and I are excited to see it develop into the innovative, state of the art building that is going to mark a new chapter for us all.”

Student Katherine Nash, said: “It was so exciting for us to be able to go and visit the new site. As students it made us feel really involved and we now can’t wait to see the new building and to start our journey at Abbeygate Sixth Form.”

Student Freddie Allsop, said: “We had a really good time visiting the new site, it really brought it to life for us and we are grateful to have had the opportunity. The plans are so impressive and we cannot wait to get started!”

Abbeygate Sixth Form College welcomes students from September 2019, in designated accommodation in the Gateway building of West Suffolk College.  The new building will open its doors in September 2020.
