The first ever black Sergeant in the RAF who was part of the Windrush generation will be flying into West Suffolk College to talk about his experiences to students.

84 year old Derrick Bobbington Thomas moved to England from British Guiana in 1957 and he will be discussing his story during an occasion that will be hosted at West Suffolk College from 11am on 11 June 2021.

The event will also include a discussion from the Windrush Commemoration Committee.

Students from Suffolk One in Ipswich (who West Suffolk College work with as part of the Eastern Colleges Group) will also be in attendance – and guests from other schools, colleges and members of the public are invited to attend (subject to Covid restrictions).

Organiser of this occasion is 31 year old Ellisha Soanes. The health and social care lecturer – and equality and diversity digital coordinator at West Suffolk College, said, “I’ve spoken to groups of young people in the past who hadn’t heard of the Windrush generation, therefore events like this can help keep memories of this incredible moment in our history alive.”

“We can’t wait for Derrick and others to share their stories and we would like to thank them all for supporting this event,” she added.
