Over 1,600 students from West Suffolk College in Bury St Edmunds have received their technical and vocational course results today.

The results from vocational and applied diploma courses – including BTEC courses – saw a 91% achievement rate. Stand out results include 93% Achievement for Level 3 Children's Play, Learning and Development programmes, which required over 300 hours of work experience.

Among the smiling faces was Amy Fitzpatrick, 18, and Jasmine Elkin, 19, who both got Distinctions across the board for a BTEC in Children’s Play Learning and Development at West Suffolk College.

Amy said: “I’m relieved and overwhelmed that all of the hard work paid off. I couldn’t have done it without the support of my teachers - they were always available and the work placement was brilliant. I’m now going on to the Early Childcare Studies degree

Jasmin added: “I really enjoyed studying at West Suffolk College and all of my tutors have been so supportive and amazing despite working through a pandemic. I’m going on to the University of Suffolk to study midwifery - I’m over the moon and can’t wait to start!”

West Suffolk College is part of the Eastern Colleges Group – which also includes Abbeygate Sixth Form College in Bury St Edmunds and One Sixth Form College in Ipswich.

Dr Nikos Savvas, Chief Executive of Eastern Colleges Group, said: “These results are an incredible achievement and I’d like to congratulate all of our students and staff for all that they have done to support one another to get some impressive, and well deserved, grades. They should be applauded not just for their talents and skills, but also for their resilience dedication.

“What is vital is not just the outcomes that a student achieves, but how they will then use these grades in the future. Our role as a group of colleges is as much about aspiration as it is about achievement – and we all take great pride in the fact that our students will go onto to influence so many areas of business, enterprise and public life in the future.”

Colin Shaw, Principal of Sixth Form Provision at West Suffolk College, added: “Our students have been amazing and worked so hard during challenging times. Many of our courses have seen fantastic results – such as 96% achievement rate in Level 3 Health and Social Science course. I’d like to congratulate each and every one of our students and our teams for their dedication and commitment.”

The Eastern Colleges Group is a collective of post-16 education providers (West Suffolk College, Abbeygate Sixth Form and One Sixth Form), sharing the same strategic aims and committed to providing outstanding vocational and academic excellence to over 15,000 students across the region.
