student royal work experience cook 850pxFreddie will be going to meet Mark Flanagan, Royal Chef at Buckingham Palace to spend some time in the kitchens and to hear all about Royal life.

One of our hospitality students has won a local college cook off competition winning a day’s work experience with the Royal Chef at Buckingham Palace.

As part of the Newmarket open weekend, Freddie Gower prepared three courses for the competition with the support of tutor Rob Reynolds and competed against Cambridge Regional College.

Freddie said: “I’m chuffed to bits to have won this competition and for someone like me who is still developing and growing in confidence this opportunity is a once in a lifetime. I would like to thank the team and Mike and Rob who have mentored and supported me all the way.”

Freddie worked hard to prepare the dishes on the Thursday before the competition. He produced a clam chowder with smoked corn, chorizo, celery and coriander for the starter. Followed by pork loin & cheek with butternut, apple & chestnut and dessert was meringue with white chocolate and a pistachio & raspberry Eton mess.

As part of the unique work experience Freddie will be going to meet Mark Flanagan, Royal Chef at Buckingham Palace to spend some time in the kitchens and to hear all about Royal life.

Mike Mulvihill said: “We are so proud of Freddie and this amazing achievement, he thoroughly deserves this opportunity and we must also thank Sean Melville and Tristan Welch for the support. We are over the moon to have retained the cup.”

Sean Melville, Executive Head Chef at Bedford Lodge Hotel and who organises the competition said: “I would like to congratulate the team from West Suffolk College, Freddie and Rob did a fantastic job. It is wonderful to see this competition grow and go from strength to strength and I would like to thank everyone for the support – what a way to kick start the new term!”
