Case Study
Hannah Todd, Design Lead (Schools), Global Design ELT, Cambridge University Press
I work in the design team in the English Language Teaching department and lead on the design of our primary and secondary print and digital products and marketing campaigns.
I currently manage one team member of the design team, I am also responsible for managing large projects, as a senior member of the design team, I also work closely with the other Design Leads to support the Global Design Director in the leadership of the team.
I chose to study the ILM level 5 Leadership and Management course as I was keen to develop my skills as a manager and leader further, with the aim of developing the required skills and knowledge to develop further in my career in design.
Balancing studying and my full-time work has been challenging, however I have overcome this by tailoring each project and assignment to relate to my role, using experiences in the workplace to evidence and reflect upon, as well as reading books related to design and leadership. This ensures that throughout my study, I am learning skills that are not only relevant to my role but also of interest to me as a designer.
I have applied a range of skills and knowledge in the workplace, learning essential skills I can apply when project managing large design projects, including reporting, time management and prioritisation. Stakeholder management is a key part of my role, presenting and pitching designs to key stakeholders for their approval. The course has provided me with the skills and knowledge to improve my stakeholder management and I have provided my colleagues in the design team with the resources needed to support them in stakeholder management.
The Level 5 ILM Leadership and Management course gives me the flexibility to tailor my learning to be relevant to my own role and interests, with my tutor and managers support. Through reflective learning, I have also been able to continue to adapt and implement new techniques learnt, putting them into practice in my role. Through the course I have also made new friends with colleagues from other areas of Cambridge University Press, learning from their experiences and about the different areas of the business. We have also set up study groups to support each other on assignments and projects, as well as knowledge sharing.
