Engineering at West Suffolk College provides a practical and theoretical introduction to mechanical and electronic engineering, computer aided drawing and microprocessing. You’ll get the skills to help solve the problems of tomorrow – from how aircraft work to the electronics in your mobile phone.

The Level 3 course could earn you enough UCAS points to study engineering at any UK university or take an advanced apprenticeship, working with an engineering firm and career off to an early start.

At West Suffolk College we offer organisations and learners the chance to learn and develop the skills required to ensure engineering remains prominent in the local area. We offer Level 2 to Level 6 and work with employers across many different pathways such as Mechanical, Electrical, Electronic, Maintenance, Welding, Tool Making, Design, Installation etc. Our excellent facilities allow for learning to be conducted in a very supportive environment and our work based team helps to embed that classroom knowledge fully in the workplace.

Overview of course

 

The Level 1 course is designed to provide the student with a sound grounding in welding studies and is intended for those who need to obtain a basic skill in welding. The course is very hands on and takes place in our well equipped workshop.

 

The topics covered are Health and Safety in the workshop, tools and safety equipment and the safe and correct use of welding sets.

 

The programme includes five mandatory practical assessments and an oral test which covers the knowledge requirements for the programme of study. The oral test will be carried out by the assessor following the successful completion of the practical tests.

 

This course will be run at West Suffolk College, Bury St Edmunds on a Thursday evening from 6pm - 9pm on the following dates:

 

16, 23, 30 January, 

6, 13, 27 February,

6, 13, 20, 27 March

3 April 2025

 

 

If you wish to undertake training only without City and Guilds assessments, the cost would be £695**

Entry requirements

No specific prior qualifications, learning or experience are required for candidates undertaking the Level 1.

Further course detail

The modules available are as follows:

  • Level 1 Award in Manual Metal Arc Welding
  • Level 1 Award in Metal Inert Gas (MIG), Welding
  • Level 1 Award in Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) Welding

Only one is attainable within the 11 weeks of the course.

Will I have to provide anything?

Delegates will need to provide their own Personal Protective Equipment as follows to be worn at every session:

 

  • Steel Toe capped safety boots
  • Overalls
  • Fire Retardant Welding Gloves
  • Welding Masks

The course attracts a level of funding which for eligible delegates reduces the course fee to £395. However, there is full funding available to students that meet criteria such as: earnings below £25,000 gross per annum or are in receipt of certain benefits.
