Engineering at West Suffolk College provides a practical and theoretical introduction to mechanical and electronic engineering, computer aided drawing and microprocessing. You’ll get the skills to help solve the problems of tomorrow – from how aircraft work to the electronics in your mobile phone.

The Level 3 course could earn you enough UCAS points to study engineering at any UK university or take an advanced apprenticeship, working with an engineering firm and career off to an early start.

The East of England is a powerhouse for the UK economy much of which comes from the outstanding engineering companies in the region.

At West Suffolk College we offer organisations and learners the chance to learn and develop the skills required to ensure engineering remains prominent in the local area. We offer Level 2 to Level 6 and work with employers across many different pathways such as Mechanical, Electrical, Electronic, Maintenance, Welding, Tool Making, Design, Installation etc. Our excellent facilities allow for learning to be conducted in a very supportive environment and our work based team helps to embed that classroom knowledge fully in the workplace.

Quick facts

Qualification type Level 2 Diploma
Duration 1 year
Study times You will be expected to be in college for a minimum of 3 days per week, from 9:15 to 4:00. Your timetable will be confirmed at induction.
Entry requirements A minimum of Grade 4 English and maths GCSEs or a Level 1 Diploma with appropriate grades in relevant units. All applicants will also attend an interview.

Work placements 40hrs of work placements

 

Is it for me?

This course is ideal if you're starting out in Engineering as it provides real-world, hands-on training and focuses on building your broad-based practical skills and knowledge. 
The course will provide you with the opportunity to reinforce the knowledge and understanding required to be successful in the Engineering industry. You will gain a formal Engineering qualification that is recognised by industry as the gold standard, giving you a head start to gain an Apprenticeship with one of the many local employers West Suffolk College works with, or allow you to move on to our Level 3 qualification.  
You will learn how to work effectively and safely. In addition to the practical skills you will develop, you will also improve your employability through the enhancement of your communication, numeracy and information technology abilities.

Work experience placements

You will need to undertake 40 hours work experience placement within the industry, which will further develop your skills and knowledge in a real-life environment. 

Assessment

Learners will be assessed through a variety of methods; these involve both internal and external assessments which will allow learners to develop their vocational and study skills.
