About the course
The Adult Maths and English department with Eastern Education Group offers a range of high-quality teaching options to suit all expectations and lifestyles:
Daytime and Evening Classes
We offer classes to suit those who prefer to study in-class on a weekly basis. These classes run for 16 weeks (term-time only) and each class is 3 hours in duration (with the examinations taking place at the end of the course).
The fully online course is designed for students wishing to achieve a functional skills qualification without the requirement of attending a face-to-face class. These courses run for 12 weeks and can be studied from the comfort of your own home, however, will require you to have access to, and the ability to use a digital device such as a computer, laptop. or tablet with access to the Microsoft Teams application via the internet (the examinations will take place at your nearest Eastern Education Group Personal and Professional Learning Centre). Click the link above and select Functional Skills English Online to find out more.
Summer School (2025) Intensive
We offer a 1-week intensive class for learners looking to fast-track themselves into completing a level 1 or level 2 Functional skills English qualification. This course will run Monday to Friday 9.30am - 4.30pm with the final exam being held on the Friday. This course is not offered to learners who may be studying at a lower level as the intensive nature of the course is not suited to lower level learners and we would recommend attendance during one of our term-time classes.
Entry requirements
There are no formal requirements, but the results of initial assessments will be taken into account when deciding on the qualification and level for which you will be entered.
If you are applying for an online class, you must already have a Level 1 or your initial assessment should indicate that you are L1 or above. You must also have a laptop or desktop with a camera and microphone to be able to join the online class.

What you'll learn (core modules)
This course will also provide you with English skills in preparation for progressing to GCSE, university and/or employment.
You will be part of a small, friendly classroom and will focus on building everyday practical skills such as letter writing, report writing, the use of formal and informal language and reading techniques. You will also take part in talks and discussions, working towards the reformed qualification in Functional Skills English.
The qualification comprises three assessments: reading, writing and speaking and listening.
How will I be assessed?
Examinations will be taken for reading and writing along with a speaking and listening assessment.
Speaking and listening can be assessed online or face to face. Reading and writing examinations will require attendance at your local West Suffolk College learning centre.
There will be the opportunity to sit mock exams, in preparation, and your tutor will provide written and verbal feedback.
Where is the course delivered? (facilities/classrooms)
If studying in-class, lessons are planned to take place at the Eastern Education Group Personal and Professional learning centre in Thetford.
Click here to visit the West Suffolk College in Thetford webpage.
Online classes will be delivered using Microsoft TEAMS and alongside the same great standard of teaching, students will also have regular one to one sessions with the tutor to ensure everyone is given the support they need.
Further details and options will be provided once you submit an enquiry about our courses.
Where will this course take me?
Functional Skills qualifications for Levels 1 and 2 are progression routes towards the GCSE. When a qualification is successfully achieved you will have the option to progress onto a higher level functional skill or a GCSE.
How much will it cost?
If you have lived within the EU for the previous 3 years and do not already have a GCSE grade C or above in this subject then you qualify for full course funding.
I'm interested. What should I do now?
