Overview of course
This 1/2 day Medical Terminology course is delivered by a very experienced and knowledgeable tutor who works as a Physician Associate within Primary Care in a local GP surgery and West Suffolk Hospital.
This course will be delivered at West Suffolk College, University and Professional Development Centre, Bury St Edmunds.
This course is ideal for delegates working within Healthcare sector.
Main learning objectives of the course are:
· Name and identify components of medical words
· Build and split medical words using word components
· Understand the meaning of medical words, relating to levels of organisation
· Build medical words relating to levels of organisation
· Understand medical abbreviations relating to cells and tissues

Within this course, delegates will cover:
1. Adult learning
· Explain how adults learn through spaced repetition, conversion of short to long term memory
· Active vs passive learning
2. When medical terminology is used
· Not between professionals and patients – patient friendly language
· When patients use terms like 'vertigo' its unhelpful to professionals
· Medical terms should only be between professionals.
3. Components of medical words
· Prefix – start of the word, modifies the meaning
· Word roots – most are Greek or Latin (or Arabic, Anglo-Saxon and German)
· Combining vowels – like o or other vowels, can be dropped if the suffix begins with a vowel
· Suffix – found at the end, may add to or modify the meaning
4. Levels of organisation
· Cells, tissues and organs and body systems
