About the course

Daytime and Evening Classes

These qualifications are ideal for anyone looking to gain a qualification for further study, promotion or to help their children with homework. The content of the course will give you a solid understanding of topics such as number confidence, percentages, decimals, ratios, area, graphs and charts and much more. Exams are available at 3 levels and you will be assessed before starting to ensure you are in the most appropriate group. 

 

The classes will run for 16 weeks (term-time only) and each class is 3 hours in duration with the examinations taking place at the end of the course. To get the most from this course, you will need to be able to commit to the whole 16 weeks. 

 

 

 

Entry requirements

There are no formal requirements, but the results of initial assessments will be taken into account when deciding on the qualification and level for which you will be entered.  

Qualifications

Functional Skills Maths (Edexcel) Entry Level, Levels 1 and 2.

 

Our classes are small, friendly groups of like-minded people and our experienced tutors are keen to help you do as much as you feel possible. We are there to help you succeed and every learner receives tailored support and guidance throughout their studies, from induction to exam results and even next steps.

 

You can take different levels of qualification from entry level to Level 1 or Level 2 and GCSE. We plan to offer classes that will run daytime or evenings at centres throughout Suffolk therefore you can choose which course best suits your needs.

What you'll learn (core modules)

This course will also provide you with maths skills in preparation for progressing to GCSE or university or employment.

 

You will be part of a small, friendly class studying with other like-minded people. The focus will be on building everyday practical skills such as problem solving, handling information and data etc. working towards one of three qualifications in Functional Skills mathematics.

 

The qualification comprises one final assessment divided into two sections: non-calculator and calculator.

How will I be assessed?

The Functional Skills qualification consists of one externally assessed assessment, comprising two separate sections a non-calculator section (calculator prohibited) and a calculator section (calculator permitted).

 

There will be the opportunity to sit mock exams, in preparation, and your tutor will provide written and verbal feedback.

 

Exams will take place in centre and you will be offered either a paper-based exam unless you have a specific additional support need that requires an on-screen platform.

Where will this course take me?

Functional Skills qualifications for Levels 1 and 2 are progression routes towards the GCSE. When a qualification is successfully achieved you will have the option to progress onto a higher-level Functional Skill or a GCSE.

How much will it cost?

If you have lived within the UK or EEA for the previous 3 years and do not already have a GCSE grade C or above in this subject then you qualify for full course funding.

INDUCTION and ENROLMENT

 

Once you apply online, your centre team will send you all the information you need to enrol and get set up on your course.

 

You will undertake online Initial and Diagnostic Assessments to assess the most appropriate level of study. It is important that you complete this assessment on your own and to the best of your ability so we can ensure you are in the correct class and getting the support you need.

 

Your centre team will contact you once this is completed and talk you through your results, the level that has been set and your prior achievement.  However please be aware that it will be the tutor's discretion to change your level if they feel this is not right for you, once you begin your course. 

 

You will need to supply proof of identification before the enrolment process can be completed. if you are a non-UK national, you will also need to provide proof of residency status in the UK.
