About the course

Each individual will be fully assessed by our professional tutors and advised which qualification would best suit his/her needs. Students often find attending a functional skills class beneficial prior to starting GCSE to brush up on basic Maths skills particularly if you have not studied Maths recently.

Entry requirements

During our welcome sessions we will ask you to complete a Maths diagnostic test to ensure you have the necessary skills required for GCSE, if  not we will advise you to attend a Functional skills course prior to GCSE. These courses are 14 weeks in length and start in September and February.

Qualifications

GCSE Maths (AQA) new specification grades 1-5. A Majority of students will take the foundation tier. The highest grade is 5 which is roughly equivalent to grade B.

What you'll learn (core modules)

The tutor will prepare learners for exam entry for GCSE which is completed in June 2026. The course consists of the use of scientific calculators and will start with a thorough grounding in the basics of maths to clear up any misconceptions. Despite the intensive nature of the course there should be time to introduce everyone to the fun of maths. This is a condensed course which can be very demanding but very rewarding. All sessions are taught with plenty of opportunities to ask questions. 9 core subjects that are threaded through the course are: Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction, Fractions, Decimals, Percentages, Ratio and Proportion, Scales and conversions. The new specification GCSE Maths contains a third extra content on previous years. In order to be successful students will be expected to attend a 3 hour lesson each week and spend at least the same amount of time in home studies.
