About the course
End of life care provides support for people approaching death, enabling them to live their lives as well as possible until they die.
The level 3 Certificate in the Principles of End of Life Care can give you the knowledge and understanding needed to care for patients approaching the end of their lives.
It covers a wide range of care settings, including hospices, care homes, care in the community and primary care. In this qualification, you will look at the common questions and themes in end of life care.
You will also gain an understanding of how to support a person's familial, spiritual, social and emotional needs.
Entry requirements
Learners must meet the following eligibility criteria to access this course:
- *Age: Learners must have been at least 19 years of age by 31 August 2024 (if you are aged 19-23 years you must already hold a full level 2 qualification i.e. 5 x GCSE's grade A*-C / 4-9)
- Nationality: Learners must have lived within the EU for at least the last 3 years
- Learners will be required to complete an electronic enrolment form.
- Learners will be required to complete a student declaraton.
- Learners must undertake a maths and English skills checker. (initial online course only)
- Learners will be required to attend an online induction session via zoom.(initial online course only)

- Understand communication skills in the context of end of life care

Unit 3: Assessment and Care Planning in End of Life Care
The learning outcomes for this unit are:
- Understand the holistic approach to end of life care
- Understand person centred assessment and planning
- Understand advance care planning
Unit 4: Person-Centered Approached to End of Life Care
The learning outcomes for this unit are:
- Understand the effects of symptoms in relation to end of life care
- Understand a range of therapeutic options used to support effective symptom
- Understand the principles of pain management
- Understand techniques for supporting a person with their social needs
- Understand how to support a person's spiritual, religious and cultural needs
- Understand techniques for supporting a person with their psychological and emotional needs
- Understand people's responses to dying
Unit 5: Care During the Final Hours of Life and Bereavement Care
The learning outcomes for this unit are:
- Understand how to offer appropriate support in the final hours of life
- Understand how to care for the deceased person
- Understand the process of grief and loss
- Understand how to support people following bereavement
How will I be assessed?
The course includes online learning materials in the form of interactive resources and flipbooks, a personalised login to access the online learning portal will be given on enrolment.
You will be required to work through a series of tasks and activities designed to reinforce the learning process and demonstrate your knowledge. Your personal tutor will then assess your work and provide you with constructive feedback for each unit.
Where is the course delivered? (facilities/classrooms)

All learning will be online (self-study) and can be completed at a time that suits without the need to attend college. Dedicated tutors will provide written feedback on the assessments and ongoing remote support where required.

How much will it cost?
This course is funded (free) for anyone who meets the following criteria:
- Is aged 19 or over on 31st August 2024
- And
- Has been resident in the UK or EEA for the past three years.
- And
- Meets the minimum requirements for maths and English, as set and assessed by the college.
- PLUS at least one of the following:
- Is in employment earning less than £25,000
- or
- In employment earning less than £30,491.00 and living within the Cambridge & Peterborough Catchment Area – post codes CB/PE.
- or
- Is unemployed and in receipt of a means tested benefit.
If you do not meet these conditions, you may still enrol for the course but will need to self-fund. You may be able to do this through the Advanced Learner Loan (https://www.gov.uk/advanced-learner-loan The current cost for the L3 Online courses is £811.00 per course.
