This course is designed to provide an in-depth understanding of autism, its spectrum disorders, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment.

*Age: Learners must have been at least 19 years of age by 1 August 2024
Nationality: Learners must have lived within the EU for at least the last 3 years
Learners will be required to complete an electronic enrolment form.
Learners will be required to complete a student declaration.
Learners must undertake a maths and English skills checker. (initial online course only)
Learners will be required to attend an online induction session via zoom.(initial online course only)

What you'll learn (core modules)
Autism is a very complex developmental disorder that takes time to understand. This course explains in the most simple and effective way, the needs of autistic people, how autism affects social and emotional development, and how to provide support for those with autism.
How do you know when a person has autism? Both mild and severe symptoms can be displayed, and this course helps you to identify common traits of autism, taking you through the screening and diagnosis process in detail.
This is an opportunity to develop key communication skills that are ideal for those who work in special needs teaching.
This qualification will provide you with a deeper understanding of Autism. By the end of this course you will be able to:
- Understand communication and social interaction with individuals with autism
- Understand how to support and manage transitions for individuals with autism
- Understand positive behavioural support for individuals with autism
- Understand safeguarding and resilience in the context of autism
- Understand the therapeutic interventions and support available for individuals with autism and co-occurring conditions.
How will I be assessed?
The course includes online learning materials in the form of interactive resources and flipbooks, a personalised login to access the online learning portal will be given on enrolment.
You will be required to work through a series of tasks and activities designed to reinforce the learning process and demonstrate your knowledge. Your personal tutor will then assess your work and provide you with constructive feedback for each unit.
Where is the course delivered? (facilities/classrooms)
- All learning will be online (self-study) and can be completed at a time that suits without the need to attend college. Dedicated tutors will provide written feedback on the assessments and ongoing remote support where required.

How much will it cost?
This course is funded (free) for anyone who meets the following criteria:
- Is aged 19 or over on 31st August 2024
- And
- Has been resident in the UK or EEA for the past three years.
- And
- Meets the minimum requirements for maths and English, as set and assessed by the college.
- PLUS at least one of the following:
- Is in employment earning less than £25,000
- or
- In employment earning less than £30,491.00 and living within the Cambridge & Peterborough Catchment Area – post codes CB/PE.
- or
- Is unemployed and in receipt of a means tested benefit.
If you do not meet these conditions, you may still enrol for the course but will need to self-fund. You may be able to do this through the Advanced Learner Loan (https://www.gov.uk/advanced-learner-loan The current cost for the L3 Online courses is £811.00 per course.
